Mr. Brian Bachmeyer Receives Award and Scholarship
Outstanding Undergraduate Student in Wildlife & Fisheries Sciences - Brian was chosen from among over 350 undergraduate students as the Department's most outstanding student. He was chosen for this award for his involvement and contributions to the Department of Wildlife & Fisheries Sciences. Brian has demonstrated outstanding leadership in his role as President of the TAMU Chapter of the American Fisheries Society. The TAMU chapter has greatly increased its membership, activities, and vitality under Brian's leadership. This year, under Brian's leadership, this student organization has been reborn and revitalized. His has demonstrated how the actions of one or a few individuals can make a huge difference in organizations. Brian's success in dealing with complex challenges seems derive from his energy, communication and organizational skills, and level-headed manner of dealing with people.
Recipient of the Rick & James Beck Memorial Scholarship in Wildlife & Fisheries Sciences - Brian was one of two undergraduate students to receive this $1000 scholarship in the Department of Wildlife & Fisheries Sciences. The scholarship was established in memory of a former WFSC Student and his brother. The scholarship is given to students interested in the aquatic sciences that have made a significant contribution to the Department. The scholarship was established to reward students that have faced and overcome obstacles during their educational career, and have proven that they are willing to work longer and harder to achieve academic success. Brian embodies the ideal student that this scholarship was set up to reward.
Dr. Hogan and ASME Students Attend Regional Conference in Louisiana
April 18-20 the ASME Student Section attended a student conference at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, Louisiana with Dr. Harry Hogan, associate professor and undergraduate coordinator for the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Texas AM University.
There were several areas of competition for the students including a sports competition where the Aggies placed first in volleyball and third in soccer. There was also the Old Guard Poster Competition where Anosh Wadia received a special certificate of participation, and in the Old Guard Oral Presentation Competition, Brian Wilks received the Best Technical Content award and was given a $50 cash prize and later went on to receive the first-place award in the category at the end of the competition which was a $500 cash prize plus financial support to attend the national ASME IMECE conference in Boston, MA, Oct. 31-Nov. 6, for the national competition. His presentation was entitled "Low-Cost Control of a Furuta Pendulum" and was done as part of University Research Fellows thesis project under the supervision of Dr. Won-jong Kim. The group was also recognized with a tie for First Place in having the most attendees at the conference.
Dr. Ibrahim Karaman Receives the Gary Anderson Early Achievement Award
Dr. Ibrahim Karaman has been awarded the Gary Anderson Early Achievement Award by the ASME and AIAA Committees on Adaptive Structures. The award will be presented at the 2008 Smart Structures and Materials meeting in San Diego, CA. The award will be presented on Tuesday, March 11 at 8am just prior to the presentation by the plenary speaker. Karaman will also receive a plaque and an honorarium of $1000 from the ASME / AIAA Technical Committees.
Karaman is an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical engineering at Texas A&M University. He is a member of the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society, the American Society of Metal - International, and the Materials Research society. He received his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from Bogazici University in Istanbul, Turkey in 1995, his masters in mechanical engineering from Bogazici University in Istanbul, Turkey in 1996, and his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, Illinois in 2000.
Dr. Taher Schobeiri Receives ISROMAC Award
Dr. Taher Schobeiri, a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University, was awarded the ISROMAC Award from the Pacific Center of Thermal- Fluid Engineering in recognition of his outstanding research Contributions in the area of Unsteady Aerodynamics, Heat Transfer and Control of rotating Machinery. The award was given in Honolulu, Hawaii on February 17-21, 2008.
Schobeiri is a member of several professional organizations including the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He received his B.S. in 1967, his M.S. in 1970 and his Ph.D. in 1978 from the department of mechanical engineering at the Technical University Darmstadt in Germany.
